High-Scoring Short Words in Scrabble You Should Memorize

Short words with rare letters score big in tight board positions. These two and three-letter power words — ZA, QI, XI, OX, AX — are worth more than most seven-letter plays.

Some of the highest-value Scrabble plays are only two or three letters long. Short words let you dump high-point tiles in tight positions where longer words simply do not fit.

The Power of Two-Letter Words

Scrabble has 107 valid two-letter words. Memorizing the ones using high-value tiles is essential. Short words allow you to hook onto existing plays and score across two rows simultaneously — called "parallel play."

Highest-Scoring Two-Letter Words

  • ZA (11 pts) — slang for pizza; the only Z two-letter word.
  • QI (11 pts) — the Chinese life force; the only Q word without U.
  • XI (9 pts) — Greek letter; extremely useful for the X tile.
  • OX (9 pts) — the animal; a classic high-scorer.
  • AX (9 pts) — a cutting tool; excellent X dump.
  • EX (9 pts) — former partner; easy to remember and play.
  • XU (9 pts) — Vietnamese currency; valid in Scrabble.
  • JO (9 pts) — a sweetheart; the only J two-letter word.

Best High-Scoring Three-Letter Words

  • ZAX (19 pts) — a tool for cutting roof slates; extraordinary score.
  • ZAP (14 pts) — to strike suddenly; excellent P combination.
  • ZAG (13 pts) — to turn sharply; great for board control.
  • ZIT (12 pts) — a pimple; common and easy to place.
  • QAT (12 pts) — an African plant; one of the best Q-without-U words.

How to Use These Words Strategically

Short high-value words are most powerful played parallel to existing words. A two-letter word alongside a five-letter word scores both totals simultaneously. This is how expert players consistently score 40–60 points on "simple" plays.
