Scrabble Strategy Essentials

Hunt for bingos with common stems

Racks containing SATINE, RETINA, or SATIRE are one letter away from dozens of 7-letter bingos. If your rack is close to one of these stems, consider exchanging a tile rather than making a small play.

Play parallel, not just through

The highest-scoring plays are often short words laid parallel to existing words, forming several 2-letter words at once. Memorize the 2-letter word list — it multiplies your options on a crowded board.

Save the S and blank for big moments

An S can pluralize an existing word while starting your own — a double score. Only spend an S or blank for 10+ extra points; otherwise hold it for a bingo setup.

Watch the premium squares

A modest word on a triple-word square beats a fancy word on plain tiles. Before playing, check whether your move opens a triple for your opponent — defense wins close games.

Balance your rack

Aim to keep a mix of vowels and consonants after every play (ideally 3–4 consonants, 2–3 vowels). Dumping duplicate letters early prevents dead racks later.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Chasing the longest word instead of the highest score

A 4-letter word on a premium square routinely outscores a 7-letter word on plain tiles. Sort by points, not length, and check where each word actually fits on your board.

Forgetting the blank tile

Enter blanks as ? — leaving them out hides hundreds of playable words. A blank is most valuable completing a bingo, not standing in for a 1-point letter.

Emptying your rack of vowels (or consonants)

A high-scoring play that leaves you with AEIOU or six consonants often costs more over two turns than it gains in one. Check what your rack looks like after the play.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bingo in Scrabble?

A bingo is when you play all 7 tiles from your rack in one turn. It earns a 50-point bonus on top of the word score, making it the single most impactful play in Scrabble.

How do I handle a blank tile?

The finder works with the exact letters you type, so enter the specific letter you want your blank to stand in for and search again. Blank tiles score 0 points, so favor plays where the blank completes a high-value word.
