Two-Letter Words Every Scrabble Player Must Know

Memorizing the 107 valid two-letter words is the single biggest improvement you can make to your Scrabble game. Start with QI, ZA, XI, and JO.

If there is one thing that separates average Scrabble players from strong ones, it is knowledge of two-letter words. These tiny plays unlock board positions that longer words cannot reach and consistently produce disproportionate scores.

Why Two-Letter Words Matter So Much

Two-letter words let you play tiles in spaces that longer words cannot fill. When a premium square sits just one tile away from an existing word, a two-letter play can score double or triple word points while simultaneously creating a new hook for your next move. Players who know the full two-letter list consistently outscore players who do not.

The Highest-Scoring Two-Letter Words

  • QI (11 pts) — the only two-letter Q word. Essential for playing Q without a U.
  • ZA (11 pts) — slang for pizza. The easiest Z play in tight board positions.
  • JO (9 pts) — Scottish word for sweetheart. The only two-letter J word.
  • XI (9 pts) — Greek letter worth 9 points for just two tiles.
  • AX, EX, OX (9 pts each) — all valid X plays.

Common Two-Letter Words to Memorize

  • AA, AB, AD, AE, AG, AH, AI, AL, AM, AN, AR, AS, AT, AW, AX, AY
  • BA, BE, BI, BO, BY
  • DA, DE, DO
  • ED, EF, EH, EL, EM, EN, ER, ES, ET, EW, EX
  • FA, FE

How to Practice Two-Letter Words

The most effective practice method is to study the list in alphabetical groups of five or six words per day. Flashcard apps work well, but the fastest improvement comes from actually playing these words in games and observing how they create scoring opportunities you previously missed.
