Z is worth 10 points in Scrabble. Learn the best short and long Z words — from ZA and ZIT to PIZZAZZ — and when to play each one.
Z is worth 10 points in Scrabble — tied with Q as the highest-value tile in the game. Unlike Q, Z is relatively easy to play. Dozens of common words contain Z, and knowing the best ones is a guaranteed way to boost your score in any word game.
Z appears in Wordle answers relatively rarely, but when it does, players are often unprepared. Words like JAZZY, FIZZY, BUZZY, PIZZA, CRAZE, and FROZE have caught many players off guard. If your clue shows a Z somewhere in the answer, the word is likely related to sound, energy, or a common suffix like -ZE or -ZY.
Never waste the Z tile on a small play. Hold it until you can place it on a Double or Triple Letter Score square, or use it in a word that also spans a Double Word Score. ZAP normally scores 14 points (Z = 10, A = 1, P = 3). If Z lands on a triple-letter square, ZAP scores 34 points before any word multipliers or cross-words.
ZIP, ZOO, and ZONE illustrate different ways to pair Z with vowels. Short plays can be useful when the board is crowded, but they are not always the highest-scoring choice.
Check your chosen word list and calculate all crossing words before placing a valuable tile.
ZA scores 11 points in standard English Scrabble before premiums (Z = 10, A = 1). On a double-letter square covering Z, it scores 21 points. Not every word game uses the same accepted vocabulary or premium-square rules.
Practice calculating three Z placements, including one that creates a cross-word. Verify each candidate in the relevant dictionary before playing.
Word games use different dictionaries and scoring rules. Check the rules for your specific game, verify unfamiliar words, and use solver suggestions to learn patterns rather than assuming every suggestion is valid in every puzzle.
